No hot water, a leak, a rumbling tank or a pilot that won’t stay lit. Tell us what it’s doing and we’ll tell you whether it’s a repair or time for a new one.
The usual causes, and when the answer is a new heater instead of a repair.
No hot water
On a gas heater, the pilot light or igniter may have stopped working. On an electric heater, a heating element, the thermostat or a tripped breaker are the usual suspects.
Repair or replace: If the heater is old, or this is not the first repair, replacing it can make more sense than fixing it.
Leaking water heater
Water near the heater can come from a loose fitting, the drain valve, or the pressure relief valve. Those can often be repaired.
Repair or replace: If the tank itself is leaking, it can't be repaired. The fix is a new water heater.
Rumbling, popping or banging
Sediment and scale settle on the bottom of the tank. When the burner or element heats through that layer, it makes noise and works harder than it should.
Repair or replace: Flushing the tank can help. A heater that has been noisy for years may be near the end.
Pilot won't stay lit or igniter won't fire
On a gas heater, a pilot that keeps going out often points to the thermocouple or the gas control. An igniter that clicks without lighting needs a look too.
Repair or replace: These parts are usually repairable on a heater that is otherwise in good shape.
Not enough hot water
Hot water that runs out faster than it used to can mean a failing element, a broken dip tube, or a tank half full of sediment.
Repair or replace: It can also mean the heater is too small for your household now. Sizing up is a replacement question.
Rusty or smelly hot water
Brown hot water can mean the inside of the tank is corroding. A rotten-egg smell from the hot side only can come from the anode rod reacting with the water.
Repair or replace: Corrosion inside the tank is a sign it's time to replace it.
Smell gas?
Do not try to relight the pilot. Leave the house, then call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
