Is it time?
Signs it’s time to replace your water heater
If one of these sounds like yours, it’s worth pricing a replacement before it fails on its own schedule.
No hot water, or it runs out fast
Showers go cold sooner than they used to, or there's no hot water at all.
Water around the base
A leaking tank does not repair itself. Once the tank itself is leaking, replacement is the fix.
Rumbling or popping
Noise from the tank as it heats usually means sediment and scale have built up on the bottom.
Rusty or discolored hot water
If only the hot side comes out brown or rusty, the inside of the tank may be corroding.
It's old
Age is one of the clearest warning signs. Check the date on the label. If you don't know how old it is, that's worth finding out before it fails.
Repairs keep adding up
When you're paying for the second or third repair, the money is usually better spent on a new heater.

Tank or tankless?
Both work. The difference is how they heat, how much room they take, and the price.
| Compare | Tank (40 or 50 gal) | Tankless |
|---|---|---|
| Installed price | $1,850 (40 gal) or $2,150 (50 gal) | $4,000 |
| How it heats | Heats and stores a full tank, ready to use | Heats water as it flows, only when you turn on a tap |
| Running out | Can run out when several showers run back to back | Keeps going as long as you stay within its flow rate |
| Space | A floor-standing tank in the garage, attic or closet | A compact unit mounted on the wall |
| Best for | Replacing your current tank like for like, at the lowest price | Larger households, long showers, or freeing up space |

Hard water is hard on water heaters
The scale that crusts your faucets also builds up inside the tank. A softener stops it at the point water enters your home. Our Standard Whole-Home Softener + Filtration for city water is $2,650 installed.

Water heater FAQs
How much does it cost to replace a water heater?
Our installed prices are $1,850 for a 40-gallon tank water heater, $2,150 for a 50-gallon tank, and $4,000 for a tankless water heater.
Should I get a 40-gallon or a 50-gallon tank?
As a rough guide, a 40-gallon tank suits smaller households and a 50-gallon suits larger families or homes with a big soaking tub. If you run out of hot water with the tank you have now, size up. Call us with what you have and we'll help you pick.
Is tankless worth it?
It costs more up front. What you get is hot water that doesn't run out within the unit's flow rate, and a compact unit on the wall instead of a tank on the floor. If your current tank is doing the job and price matters most, a like-for-like tank replacement is the simpler choice.
Are you licensed for plumbing?
Yes. Honest Water Co holds Texas Plumbing License #46412.
Can you repair my water heater instead?
Sometimes a repair is the right call. If the tank itself isn't leaking and the heater isn't old, call us and we'll talk through it. See our water heater repair page for the common problems.
Will hard water damage my new water heater?
Hard water leaves scale in the bottom of a tank and inside a tankless unit, and that buildup is what makes them work harder. A water softener stops it. Our Standard Whole-Home Softener + Filtration for city water is $2,650 installed.
